Buffalo 1, Gwinnett 4: Bisons Drop A Tough One

It would have been a long day for the Buffalo Bisons if they had lost in nine innings. But losing in 13, while only scoring one run made it even longer.

The game proved to be a pitcher’s duel, kind of. There was no miraculous stuff, accompanied with a good amount of defense—but the key was the offensive ineptitude. Buffalo’s starter Randy Wolf went seven scoreless innings, allowing only five hits. The solid pitching kept the game 0-0 for what some (myself included) would call far too long.

It took seven innings, but the Bisons finally broke the tie. The rally started with a double from Matt Hauge. The hit was topped off with a fantastic slide into second base to avoid the tag. Hauge advanced to third on a beautiful Daric Barton bunt single. The first and third situation led to a double play, but more importantly produced a run that gave Buffalo the 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately the run would not hold. In the top of the eighth the Braves responded with a pinch-hit home run that silenced the crowd. The bomb forced eventual extra innings.

The new stalemate looked to be coming to an end in the 11th inning. In the bottom half the Bisons loaded the bases on a walk, base hit and hit batsman. However, Hauge, the best hitter in the International League, struck out to end the rally.

The stalemate was actually broken in the 13th inning. Unfortunately, it came from the Gwinnett Braves. A double from the Braves scored their runner from second. Three straight walks, including one with bases loaded, pushed across yet another run. The Braves sacrificed another out to lengthen their lead to 4-1 on a pop fly to center field.

The Bisons notched a hit in the bottom of the inning, but went down without much noise at all. The final score in 13 innings was 4-1. The Braves go for the sweep of a three game set against the Bisons tomorrow.

 Mascot Race

Yet again it looked like Celery was going for her first victory of the season. That is until she fell flat on her back. The snafu handed Atomic Wing an easy win.
