Spikes Returns to Divisional Foe

"#PoWwWwWwWwW!" will no longer be a popular hashtag in the Buffalo area. Brandon Spikes uses that hashtag on Twitter to fire up his fans. Spikes made it official that he will not be returning to Buffalo next season as a member of the Bills. He’s taking his talents back to Foxborough, Massachusetts. Spikes played his first four NFL seasons for the Patriots after being drafted out of Florida. After signing with Buffalo last offseason, he took a shot at the Patriots organization:

Spikes signed a one-year deal with Buffalo to sure up their rushing defense. It turned out to be a big signing after the Bills lost star linebacker Kiko Alonso due to an offseason ACL tear (Alonso has since been traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for LeSean McCoy).

In today’s NFL, a true run-stuffing linebacker isn’t nearly as valuable as it used to be. With that being said, Spikes is a talented linebacker, but his asking price was too high for the Bills to consider matching. He was likely looking for the salary of a starting linebacker. The Bills would only use him on 1st and 2nd down as he’s a liability in the passing game. Under Rex Ryan’s scheme, I’m sure we’ll be just fine without him. Spikes wasn’t as productive last year in a Bills uniform as he has been for the Patriots in the past, racking up only 54 tackles. Despite his comments after leaving the team last offseason, it’s obvious that he thrives more under Bill Belichick’s system.

I remember Brandon Spikes as a Patriot knocking Fred Jackson out with a headshot and flexing afterwards. He’s always been a scary presence in the middle of the field. But he brought excitement to Bills fans and was embraced on Twitter. There was even a North American porcupine named “Spikes” after him at the Buffalo Zoo after a charity meet and greet event. He will be back at the Ralph in week two of the 2015 NFL season, when the Patriots come to town.
