Mayweather vs Pacquiao Ground Rules

Tonight at 11 p.m. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will step into the ring at MGM Grand in Las Vegas for the fight of a lifetime. But before they do so I think we should get some things out of the way. You know, bring everyone to the center of the ring, lower the microphone, and tap gloves before they throw hands. It’s better to air out the dirty laundry now so that we can just enjoy the fight later. It would be atrocious to let these items go ignored, but we must also try not to let them completely overshadow the spectacle, for our own sake. Let’s call them proverbial ground rules.

First things first, we should understand that although this fight is great for the sport of boxing, it is long overdue. Mayweather is 38-years-old and Pacquiao is 36. This fight should have happened years ago, when both fighters were in their prime and no “what if’s” could be had. But, it’s happening now. Better late than never, I suppose.

Secondly, let’s set aside the fact that this fight is entirely about money and has little to do with sport, competition or pride. Sure, all of those are present, but above all tonight is about money. If finding out who is the better fighter were a priority, again, this fight would have happened years ago. This is the richest fight in history by far, and Mayweather and Pacquiao are well aware of that check coming their way. It sure will be a great fight, but it’s just the undercard to cold hard cash.

Finally there is Mr. Mayweather, his polarizing personality, and tragic past. He has been arrested for assault at least seven times against five different women. That is obviously despicable and sickening. It’s hard to root for a fighter who fights women. But I am no Keith Olbermann. I cannot start an uprising or boycott the fight. So instead I’ll simply report the information and leave you to make a decision. For my own sanity I’ll simply be taking an objective look tonight and rooting for my preferred boxer, not preferred person, if that helps at all.

Now that we got those ground rules out of the way, let’s touch gloves and head to our corners for the fight. I have Mayweather winning by unanimous decision. But either way this will be the fight of a lifetime, a true spectacle. To all watching, enjoy.
