Buffalo Sabres Coach Is Something Special

Ted Nolan

To bring back a coach is special. Take for example when Ted Nolan was coach of the New York Islanders and he asked the team owner to bring back Al Arbour to coach one more game because statistically Coach Arbour was at 1499 games. It was set up for Al Arbour to come back behind the bench with Coach Nolan. Arbour was to be honored for helping architect four in a row Stanley Cup winning Islander teams and to reach the 1500 games coached plateau.

No, the Sabres have not won any cups. They came close twice, but both those teams did not quite have enough to make it over the top. In the beginning the Sabres were a growing team with plenty of scoring. They were a bit suspect in net with an old veteran and his stomach ailments. Along with a younger goalie struggling with at least three a game goal average. Then at the end of the century we skate a second time for Lord Stanley's silver. This time we had arguably the world's greatest goalie and a center nicked name Captain Crunch with 18 other skaters that played like Captain Crunch. We were indeed the hardest working team in hockey just not a scoring machine like during the French Connection days. So for the team's first cup-run they have the scoring but no goalie, then they get the goalie but cannot score consistently. Bringing back Coach of the Year Ted Nolan was a class move by the Sabres. It helps ease the loss of a well loved and respected Head Coach who coached the second of Buffalo's cup runners, ironically partially built by Coach Nolan.

I do appreciate what the Knox brothers and Mr. Golisano did for hockey in Buffalo. There is no hockey in Buffalo without either of these owners. Now the Sabres have an owner who actually loves hockey, the Sabres, and yes even Buffalo (or so it seems to this fan). Even the casual Sabre fan can see the building up of the area directly in front of the arena. Mr. Pegula is not only building up Buffalo's hockey team but the city as well. When Mr. Pegula and Pat Lafontaine brought back Coach Nolan I can honestly remember thinking that this was something special. Along with what Mr. Pegula has done already for the Sabres and the city, my beloved Sabres are actually on a building trek towards a third and finally successful playoff run that becomes our first championship run for hockey's holy grail; the Stanley Cup. When we win I will go to a jewelry store and see if I can get a facsimile Buffalo Sabre Stanley Cup Championship ring made for myself to wear teary-eyed and swelled with civic pride, for this one long waiting Buffalo Sabre fan.
